BC Mary was a force to be reckoned with. She will be missed.

Mary Mackie, better known in many circles as BC Mary, died a few days ago. She was 83 years old.

The Legislative Raids blog written by “BC Mary” was a driving, if not the driving force behind the look see into just exactly what the hell went down with BC Rail.

BC Mary led the way and as a result of her dogged determination pressured the so called mainstream media into some effort covering the Basi Virk trial and look into other aspects of one of the biggest scams ever perpetuated on the good citizens of BC.

The Basi-Virk Trial as it became known was thoroughly covered by BC Mary. Thank God she was there because in the early days the mainstream media were not very enthralled with the notion of having to pay reporters to cover the trial. They had to in the end due in a large part to the fact that BC Mary was firing out the reports. Her reports, attendance and undercover mystique was one of the high points in BC Blogging Journalism at any level in my opinion.

RIP Mary Mackie.

BC NDP AG Critic Len Krog paid her tribute in the BC Legislature on Monday.

“I rise today to ask the House to pay its respects to the passing of one of British Columbia’s most courageous citizen journalists, a woman who was a harsh critic of the B.C. government, particularly around the sale of B.C. Rail, and also critical of yours truly, in the role that I played in criticizing the government. She was a well-known blogger. A defender of democracy, she feared no power. I’d ask the House to pay its respect to the passing of BC Mary — Mary Mackie.”

Bill Tieleman, who also covered the BC Rail Court Case, wrote

BC Mary was one of Canada’s most tireless, prolific, dedicated and dogged bloggers – with an absolute commitment to finding out the truth about the BC Legislature Raids – the Basi-Virk case – the BC Railgate story. In fact, she named her blog The Legislature Raids.

And now my friend is gone. Sadly BC Mary – Mary Mackie to those that knew her more – passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Saturday March 3 in Toronto General Hospital.

The rest of Bill Tieleman’s post can be read here.

Finally an excellent article by journalist Peter Ewart that speaks of BC Mary and reflects on her contibutions.

For many, she was known as “BC Mary” which was the name tag she used on the website that she founded and operated for six years. Her real name was Mary Mackie, and she was 83 years old when she passed away a few days ago. During her life, Mary lived in various parts of British Columbia, including the Central Interior region for a period. Most recently, because of deteriorating health, she was residing with relatives in Ontario.

Strange Alliances over the HST! Check out the other Provinces HST Comparisons.

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

Seldom do we see politicians from the right side of the political spectrum consorting with trade union leaders and left leaning  politicians of the flavour NDP!

Former Social Credit Premier Bill Vanderzalm, a populist with a flair for showboating, has been front row and centre bashing the BC Liberals ( not really liberal but conservative for our out of province readers) over their deceitful effort to ram through the HST.

Credit Vanderzalm for ringing the bell and leading the charge throughout the campaign to yank this dishonest wealth transfer scheme. The petition against the sneaky Gordon Campbell-PM Steve Harper wealth transfer ruse saw more voters signing in opposition than those who actually voted in the last provincial election.

Left leaning columnist and blogger Bill Tieleman has been on the same song sheet with the ideologically contrasting Vanderzalm from the get go. The BC Federation of Labour top guy Jim Sinclair has been there as well.

BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix

The BC NDP’s new leader Adrian Dix has been criss crossing the province, meetinging in halls, coffee shops, picnics and barbecues carrying the message against the dishonest Campbell-Harper HST deal! Adrian is proving to be an indefatigable asset. He is focused, personable and effective.

Bill Vanderzalm and Bill Tieleman

Admittedly, I was a late bloomer in some ways on this one. Oh, I signed the petition opposing the HST and enjoyed the theatre, but the optics have been contrary to all previous notions on what the left and right have stood for in the past.

The BC Liberals are saying that more taxes are good for us? That alone calls for a closer examination of the HST and upon doing so their enthusiasm for the tax shift is revealed and understood for the ripoff that it is.

Generally I have recognized that through fairly applied taxes we could move ahead with public undertakings like schools, parks, education, healthcare, environmental programs and the like. The taxation was of a progressive nature for many decades after the second world war. We surged ahead as a nation and so did most of the other nations of the western world.

Railing against taxes seemed to escalate with the advent of conservative think tanks that sprung up during the Thatcher-Reagan era. The debt clock and other neo-con distortions advanced and inflamed by the likes of the Fraser Institute denounced taxes as an impediement to investment, job creation and such. The greedy corporate mindset cannot stand paying their own share and have pursued and disrupted our economy in hopes of a free ride to the promised land.

Premier Clark is losing ground on the HST!

The sleight of hand in this regard has been well, disruptive to our senses.

The BC Liberals claiming that the ease of administration, rebates for low income types and promising reductions ahead dropping the HST from 12 to 11, to 10 maybe, in the future, possibly, if conditions are right and so on.

Cost savings ahead for those on lower incomes they beller. Of course their rampant entrenched dishonesty disguises the real tax grab being applied to the many items previously exempt from the previous GST/PST package.

Excuse me when have the BC Liberals ever given a rats ass for the poor and the middle class, pray tell?

A healthy exchange, and lively fully flushed out debate is both healthy and necessary in what passes as information in a democratic society. It is happening less and less. The PR Consultants with their paid spinners dominate much of the what passes as information in todays corporate media domiated environment. They generally produce more bovine droppings than truth or accuracy!

Back to the strange bedfellows aspect for a minute. Staunch BC Conservative right wing populist and baptist preacher Reed Elley,

Reed Elley-BC Conservative Stategist

who was MP for Nanaimo Cowichan under the Reform and Alliance configurations, is dead set against and had not pulled his punches in saying so.

It is with deep sadness that I see  disruption and division within the second party on the right. ;-(

Their great white hope, longtime Federal Conservative MP, John Cummins, supports a tax shift allowing the wealthy and big corps to shift their tax burden to the rest of us. Reed Elley does not and says so flat out. Oh dear, what to do?

John Cummins BC Conservative Leader

Vancouver Real State Direct offered this glimpse at the HST as levied in the Maritimes. As you can see there are differences on approach and impact.

And here is a glimpse at the Ontario HST for comparisons.

Guess who received the shoddiest treatment regarding the process, implementation and costs?

Yup, good ol’ BC!

Vote Yes to reject the BC HST!

Hang on over these next few days as we have a good opportunity to really see the truth in those proposing and opposing this plan to hit the middle class taxpayers to help the insatiable greed of the fat cats.

Did I mention that it would be very much in your interest to vote Yes to extinguish the HST? Well, it would. If you have not sent in your ballot please do at once. You can only vote once, sadly.

Nanaimo’s MLA Leonard Krog passes on BC NDP Leadership Bid.

Georgia Straight’s Carlito Pablo reports that NDP MLA Leonard Krog has stepped back from the race for BC NDP Leader and will wait until the February 28th deadline before endorsing any of the six candidates pursuing the leadership. It is the right decision and Leonard will continue to play a significant role in the future, most possibly as Attorney General in a new NDP Government.

It is a time for  healing, renewal and rebuilding.

Leonard Krog gets that.

Liberals Back on Top of the Heap!

In the teeter-totter world of BC Politics the latest Mustel Poll shows that the Liberals  have gained back lost ground and are now leading the BC New Democrats. I don’t know if the Las Vegas Bookies have offered odds on the political fortunes of BC Politicians but there would have been some very big winnings for those who bet on the recently decimated Liberals.

A major shift contributing to the Liberals improved showing was caused by the women demographic. They have shifted dramatically over to the Liberals, possibly attracted by Leadership frontrunner Christy Clark.

Ms Clark has signalled a snap election if she is elected to be the leader and de facto Premier. Before  people get to freaked about that Elections BC cannot just set up the required machinery overnight and a mid to late June would most likely be the earliest date advisable snap or otherwise.

Will she be able to stick handle her way around the reheated call for a full Public Inquiry over the BC Rail shenanigans? That  question looms large considering her brother and ex husband  had involvements, the scope of which are yet to be fully discovered.

An earlier Angus Reid Poll shows that upheavals in the BC Liberal and BC NDP camps did not cause the down downfall of of Carole James and Gordon Campbell. Bill Tieleman’s blog examines the results of their very poor approval ratings trailing their respective parties significantly and those dismal results told the story and fueled the trainwrecksin both parties.

Big Paper and Alternate Media Columnists on BC Politics***Updated

Our Mainstream Columnists weigh in on what has been about as wild
and wooly a time as any of us can recall. Palmer,Smyth and Leyne occupy treausured and influential seats in the BC DailyNewspaper scene. Generally they tend to be Liberal leaners, somewhat economic with accuracy in their assessments, but still their columns shape public opinion and so are worth a look from time to time.

It should be noted that while not all that lefty friendly, Province Columnist and CKNW Talker Michael Smith seems to have distanced himself from the pack and has offered independent analysis on <shudder> a more fact based basis.

Balance being what it is all about for your Sunday Morning News Fix let us include some Alternate Media offerings.  Left leaning Bill Tielman looks into our deadlocked political sawoff. Public Eye OnLine’s Sean Holman looks at Carole James actions and the Tyee’s Will McMartin assesses the politics both here and in Austraila.

Polls could weigh heavily on leadership choices while I have noted many of the projected lists are often missing names that should be there. Corky Evans is a case in point.

The ever popular former Agriculture and Health Minister in past NDP Governments still can stir the juices of BC politically involved voters. Of course he probably won’t run but that does not stop his letters and views from impacting the political scene. It can be argued that Corky’s letters offer insites seldom flushed out and readers appreciate the clarity and candor contained in them.

The Wacky World of BC  Politics amaze Canadians in other areas. I am not sure what causes are but often our livelier culture seems somewhat out of sync with the milder flavour in other parts of our country. I have often  though that, certainly on Vancouver Island, we collect all the mavericks, thinkers, non conformists and rebels from across the country. Once they arrive here that is it, there is no further to go, unless they want to swim.

Excellent Bill Tieleman piece on Campbell

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Bill Tielman nails it in this column. It is too good not to include in its entirety.

Richard

Premier Campbell continues scorched earth campaign against own BC Liberal government by reversing 15% tax cut; Bennett calls him an “abusive bully”

The pyromaniac premier surveys his handwork after torching cabinet minister Bill Bennett and the 15% income tax cut in just one day
Has Premier Gordon Campbell gone nuts?

Or is Campbell simply a long-term psychopath who has finally been exposed?
This is wacky even for British Columbia!
First Campbell threw Energy Minister Bill Bennett out of cabinet for suggesting in public that the premier step down rather than continue on until his successor is chosen.
Then Bennett held a stunning, unprecedented news conference this afternoon in which he called Campbell an abusive, intimidating bully who swore and spit at him during a caucus meeting.
And then Campbell cancels the 15% income tax cut he announced just weeks ago in his October 27 television address, a last ditch effort to boost his failed fortunes. Campbell surprise cut of the tax cut came, he claimed, to give options to his successor to chart government policy.

Is Moe Sihota cashing in as the BCNDP President?

Bill Tieleman’s Blog tells a story of Moe  Sihota collecting $72,000 a year as President of the NDP.This is unbelievable, and certainly will set the cat out amongst the pigeons if it is true.  The position was always a non paid post up until now.

If  it is true then the fallout will be something to behold. If not then some serious mischief is going on.

If true, Did Carole know?

*** Update*** Moe Sihota’s salary is being paid for by Labour.

There will be broken wheels, broken hearts and broken promises before the dust settles . Bob Simpson’s ejection got the ball rolling. The NDP is going nowhere with Carole James, but 2013 is far enough off that the ship can be righted. Perhaps we should thank Bob for causing the blowup,  but he ain’t the guy to replace Carole. Not by a long shot.

Check out  http://billtieleman.blogspot.com/> Bill Tieleman’s blog- he broke it and I expect that his sources are sound.
