This is what happened when I drove my Mercedes to pick up food stamps

Those of us fortunate enough to have had some rough patches in our lives will empathize immediately with this amazing article about the struggle back from poverty of a young couple that did everything right, and then the bottom fell out.

The line is a thin one and this piece is an example of the rollercoaster ride that an untold number of comfortably well off socially and financially successful people have experienced. This is true here in Canada, but more so in the States.

Screen-Shot-2014-07-08-at-10.38.41-AM1

Sara Bareilles played softly through the surround-sound speakers of my husband’s 2003 Mercedes Kompressor as I sat idling at a light. I’d never been to this church before, but I could see it from where I was, across from an old park, abandoned in the chilly September air. The clouds hung low as I pulled the sleek, pewter machine into the lot. But I wasn’t going to pray or attend services. I was picking up food stamps.

Even then, I couldn’t quite believe it. This wasn’t supposed to happen to people like me.

What the heck did they do right. They had no savings. The wasted money buying a car they obviously couldn’t afford. When times got tough, they kept the car instead of finally realizing they were living above their means. They refused to find employment as long as unemployment was giving them some money. These were 2 spoiled brats.

John, their savings dwindled then disappeared. They had hoped for their future to be as bright as it was shaping up to be. Then the bottom fell out for them. They, like most look to turn things around. Unfortunately this did not happen for them. At the time they obviously could afford the car they paid for it outright. Unemployed may not have looked like a permanent situation. It seems it became one.

Maybe you live somewhere magical where employment opportunities are many. It is not that way everywhere.

This does not sound like a family that wishes to be in an impoverished situation on purpose. There are many , many folks facing this same reality.

I personally, think your assessment of these folks is unrealistic. As one of the few that obviously have done everything right in your life maybe you might know the meaning of the word sympathy and compassion. Hopefully you will never be in the need of either of these. You could find yourself in some shoes that you do not like.
