Bogus CRA Con Artists Are Out To Scam You-***Updated***

Hubhat35-e1359589900170I had a call this morning that was amusing, but only because I knew that it was a scam. The caller, with a thick foreign accent, identified himself as James Anderson from the Canada Revenue Agency.  That was my first tip, and then proceeded with his rapid fire pitch.

They were on to me it seems, and my tax cheating ways, and were now moving in to nail me for fraud and Income Tax evasion. Of course I would be arrested, drawn and quartered and the rest.

Naturally I would have loved to dance around with these sleazy thugs for awhile, but that pleasure will have to wait for another day if they call back again.

Turns out he called again but I lost the call as I was on another line. So, I called him back. He answered the call as ‘Canada Revenue Agency’.

$I told him he was a cowardly loser, and shared several other descriptive phrases. I tried to engage him further but he hung up.

You can call this creep purported to be CRA Officer James Anderson if you want. His number is 450 823 0414 and you can share your thoughts with him.

*** Well possibly many of you did as the number has been disconnected***

If enough call he will he might have to get a new number. Trouble is that some folks get sucked by and pay these guys money. They can be aggressive, threatening and mean. If this happens to you write everything that you can remember down and then call  your local police station and tell them about it.

I looked up ‘Bogus Revenue Canada Collection Calls’ and of there was a whole page set up detailing the scam. I called the number and surprise all lines were busy.  I may try again later. A quick tour on Google will supply you with armloads of stories and useful information.

The police told me they know about it and it’s identified as a warning on their website.
They also instructed me to block their calls and if I did speak with them, inform them I have contacted police already.

  • Call the police. Say he threatened to kill you. They have to investigate.

Got the e.mail on wife’s computer yesterday.
Maybe Christy could help us to triple delete them?

Sadly, it’s not just one person, but rather a boiler room operating out of India. They are skilled and aggressive, and apparently quite convincing. A relative called me in a panic because she believed that the RCMP were coming to arrest her for unpaid taxes. Unfortunately it’s legal in Canada to disguise one’s originating number with a fake Canadian number, usually a 613 area code for the CRA scam. Perhaps this practice should be illegal, FFS. A few mentions on national news broadcasts could help too.

Some people are particularly vulnerable to these scams, but as for me, I’m really looking forward to my call. The Microsoft “we’ve found a problem with your computer” calls have stopped, but I enjoyed stringing them along for as long as possible, operating on the theory that if I’m keeping them occupied, I’m preventing them from getting to others.

Richard, we had a bout of these characters a couple of months back. Different name and an Ottawa area code! I got hit twice.

Today your Mr. James Anderson visited my neighbours, 3 of them. Same phone number you have.

I’ve spoken with the Oceanside RCMP about it. The saddest part is that a small number of seniors have fallen for it, usually at a cost of about $3,000 per.

I messed with them pretty thoroughly the first time. It led them to give up their phone line. Like yourself, I used some creative language and it seemed to get under the caller’s skin.

Richard thank you for your insights. Coincidentally I got the exact call from this con artist as well. I tried to call him back but he would not pick up the phone. I will be visiting my local police station to inform them of this scam.
Just recently in the Markham, Ontario area a similar scam was tried. This lady victim got scared when she hung up the phone on them and they showed up on her driveway in a black SUV. She hid and called the police who eventually caught them.
You are correct when you say they can be aggressive.

    Thank you again!
